Periodontal Therapy

Later in life, one of the major contributors to tooth loss is periodontal disease. Proper oral care and regular general dental care are a big help in preventing this unfortunate situation. Even people with otherwise healthy teeth are subject to losing them if they do not keep their gums in healthy shape. West Houston Dentistry will help you get your gums back to health and show you how to keep them healthy.

It is important to realize that some people are more susceptible to periodontal disease than others. Certain medications which reduce the saliva in your mouth can increase your risk of periodontal problems. Overgrowth of gum tissue is also a side effect of some medications. This condition can make proper cleaning of teeth and gums challenging. Genetics, hormonal changes in females, smoking and some illnesses including diabetes can put people at risk for a higher incidence of gum disease.

Gum Infection Treatment

The treatment plan for rectifying periodontal disease depends on the degree to which the disease has advanced. Early diagnosis will not require as intense treatment as later stages of the problem. Treatment entails getting the infection under control and cleaning the teeth so that gums can reattach to the tooth surface. Medications are often prescribed for serious infections and sometimes surgery is necessary to bring the infection under control

Scaling and Root Planing

Plaque and tartar must be removed from above and below the gum line. This is done through a process called scaling and root planing. Basically plaque and tartar are scraped from the tooth surface with hand or laser instruments designed specifically for this purpose. Once it has been removed, the roots of the teeth are smoothed by planing. This procedure helps remove additional bacteria.
